This reissue documents one of the more curious careers in country music. Both 1978's White Mansions and 1980's The Legend of Jesse James are Southern song cycles that were conceived by England's own Paul Kennerley, then an unknown songwriter who somehow recruited a high-profile cast for each. A Civil War saga from the Southern perspective, White Mansions suffers from caricature and cliché but benefits from signature contributions by Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter and Eric Clapton. Jesse James has more focus and narrative momentum, with Levon Helm, Johnny Cash and Emmylou Harris in lead roles. Though the albums are more noteworthy for artistic ambition than memorable material, Kennerley subsequently became a successful Nashville songwriter and Harris's husband from 1985 to 1993. --Don McLeese

- Old-time lover reviewsI can't tell you how many copies of this album (what's that?? some may ask) when it was first released, so great was my love for it. I gifted friends and family because of how it moved me, a southerner with no axe to grind. The music, the lyrics, the narratives, and the songsters remain some of my favorites. - A must haveAbove all other albums, this was the one that I craved on CD. My dad bought this album in the early 80's and he played it to death when I was a child, hence it was one of my earliest musical influences. Needless to say the vinyl record he originally bought has gone to the big record shop in the sky, thanks to the availability of the album on CD. - BrilliantWhite Mansions was played to me as a child in the 80's. Back then I thought it was just another country music collection that my parents were mad over. I have just bought this for my Dad's Christmas present and cannot wait to see his face, as his taped version is wearing very thin. The collection is basically a story of suffering in war between North and South America. Good Story and music put well together. Nice to see Eric Clapton was involved in this.
