Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: Although it could have been twice as long, this double-DVD set effectively captures over three hours of highlights from one of the most comprehensive and diverse collection of guitarists ever assembled for a single event. Recorded over three days in June of 2004 to benefit Eric Clapton's Crossroads Center in Antigua (as do the sales of this set), the show is not surprisingly heavy on the rootsy blues and country that comprise Clapton's primary inspirations. But it also includes folk (James Taylor), gospel (Robert Randolph & the Family Band), fret-shredding rockers (Steve Vai who delivers a dazzling performance), jazz (John McLaughlin), and, most interestingly, Indian classical music (a stunning piece from Vishwa Mohan Bhatt). Most compelling are the rare and sometimes unusual collaborations. Joe Walsh and Taylor clown around on 'Steamroller Blues' and Booker T. & the M.G.'s back both Joe Walsh on a rollicking 'Rocky Mountain Way' and Los Lobos' David Hidalgo tearing into a sizzling 'The Neighborhood'. Clapton and J.J. Cale share the stage as do Clapton and Carlos Santana, and a show-stopping blues summit with Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, Hubert Sumlin, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Clapton is a treat for all involved. There are some shortcomings. The event isn't presented in chronological order--different stages, days, and backing bands are shuffled with Clapton's own set scattered throughout--ZZ Top's closing is a bit anticlimactic, and there are many omissions due to time constraints. But every act rises to the occasion, and this expertly recorded and shot DVD gives the viewer a front-row seat to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. --Hal Horowitz Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - annoying omissions in UK versionseveral tracks listed on the USA version have been left off this release e.g. all of Jeff Beck, some of Carlos Santana, some of John Mayer. The layla performance - title 2 on dvd 2 - is inaccessible via regular menus - how stupid & annoying. If I buy a music DVd I don't expect to have to play childish hide n seek games with it to find the songs. Buy the USA version. Rating: - Guitar HeavenWhere to start. If you are a lover of the blues, or an electric guitar fan then this is THE DVD you must have. This surely has to be the finest gathering of artists ever assembled in one place. I was blown away with the guitar playing of all the players, it is amazing the sounds that come from their instruments, hearing is believing. I shan't list the individual performances, I will let you enjoy finding out for yourself. I will say though that "Clapton" is at his absolute best, the king playing to ... PS the hidden clip on disc 2 isn't necessarily next to the words MAIN - mine was beneath the guitar solos bit :) Rating: - This DVD has a hidden extra!!!!!!!!!!Put disc 2 in In the menu, go to Extras Move the 'pointer' to the option 'Main' but don't select it Move left one more time and you'll notice the 'pointer' vanishes then Hit select - a rather familiar riff will fill your ears....fantastic. Oh and by the way, the whole DVD is magical. Rating: - KILLER CONCERT DVD!I got this DVD for Christmas and I watched all in one sitting yesterday... Just brilliant! There's lots of stuff (even though there are sad omissions, like Jeff Beck), and lots of styles, although blues is obviously the common link... There's lots of interesting and amazing playing throughout, and even Clapton seems to play with a little more fire than usual... It was a pity the old bluesmen get so little time, but I enjoyed the whole thing a lot and even ... Read More
