For the cognoscenti of the gaming world Mr Driller is one of the most eagerly awaited launch titles for the Nintendo DS. Although not particularly well known in the West, the Mr Driller series is regarded as the best new arcade puzzle game since the genre’s Tetris-inspired heyday in the early 90s. It’s also a game which seems particularly suited to the DS since it’s all about drilling vertically into the ground and thus the two screens stacked together offer a particularly useful set-up.
As such the gameplay doesn’t different markedly from previous outings--it just looks and plays better. As with all the best puzzle games, it sounds simple as all you have to do is drill down through differently coloured groups of blocks. Blocks of the same colour will disappear together if they touch each other and the only other thing you have to worry about is collecting oxygen pills to keep going and see how deep you can drill. With your excavations constantly causing cave-ins and undrillable rocks creating unforeseen obstacles everything quickly becomes much more complicated than the simply rules first imply.
You can use the stylus to control the game but it’s much simpler to stick to the D-pad--but then the twin screens are the real reason for this appearing on the DS. The new set-up is taken particular advantage of with the new Pressure game mode, as you’re chased from the top screen by a giant drill. It may not be a technical marvel but this is still one of the best launch games for the DS. --David Jenkins

- Drill your way to fun!So do you enjoy puzzle games? Tetris was amazing but now, games are overshadowed by bigger things like Mario or Zelda games. But this shouldn't. The simplicity of just eliminating block after block with person whilst trying to gain air is what makes this game what it is. It's another addictive game with that "Oh i'll try just 1 more time" factor. We all love those. - The Spirits are HighWhen ordering games for my DS I decided that I'd get one single player game to entertain me for a long period of time(Super Mario64 DS), and one puzzle game to play briefly with friends when they bring their DS's. But when "practicing" I became utterly hooked with the game. It's like a fusion of tetris, dig dug and some other insane puzzle game.

- The DSs' TetrisMany puzzle games have tried to reproduce the frantic fun of Tetris but let's be honest, most fall short of the mark. The Mr. Driller range of games, to my mind, are the closest contenders out there for the title (on *any* platform) and the new Drill Spirits is the best version of Mr. Driller that I've ever played.

- Frantic funMr Driller is a loose update to the 80's classic Dig Dug and invloves digging deep into the ground to a target goal. As you drill away you remove coloured blocks, drilling 4 or more instigates a chain reaction clearing multiple blocks of the same colour. Your snaking path to the depths of the Earth becomes ever more perilous as undrilled blocks from above get dislodged and tumble down on you, the result of sloppy quick drilling. - An essential DS puzzle titleI'm sure you've heard about the concept of Mr. Driller - get out a drill, drill down without being killed my the blocks above you, keep drilling, reach the desired depth and complete the level. For something that in reality would be just as boring as watching paint dry, this has an addictive streak to it.
